Event Date – Saturday, April 8, 2017
The Northwest Houston Weightlifting Open is an Olympic weightlifting competition designed for lifters of all levels and abilities. It is timed to be a last chance qualifier for Senior Nationals, as well as being a qualifier for the American Open series and Texas State Championships. Male and Female competitors in Masters, Open, Junior and Youth divisions all competed in this one-day qualifier.
This event was held at Athlete Training and Health (ATH) in Spring, Texas, on April 8th. ATH is just a 30 minute drive north from downtown Houston. The ATH North Houston Training Center is a premier 40,000 square foot performance training facility with 18 Keiser platform training areas, Iron Grip and Eleiko sets and everything any athlete would need for performance development.
Memorial Hermann’s IRONMAN Sports Medicine Institute Athletic Training and Physical Therapy staff were on-site and helped monitor athletes and assisted with proper pre-event preparation.
We had several lifters qualify for national events across the country. Masters male lifter Ryan Walla qualified for the American Open in Miami FL, as well as, master’s male lifter Enrique Banda also qualified for this event. We had several Female lifters qualify for national events as well! Cori Schrier Qualified for American Open as well as Nicole Sardelich. In total, we had three national qualifiers for the upcoming National Championships in Chicago in May: Brittney Witt, Lindsay Pace, and overall female lifter Carrie Sabo all qualified for this event. On the male side, Alex Escamilla, and Dominic Stolle qualified for National Championships and Douglas Ligan also qualified for American Open.
The meet ran extremely smooth due to our mass number of volunteers that wanted to see this event to be a success. We thank all of our Athlete Training and Health team members who were on site and in the warm-up area, as well as the Texas State University Weightlifting team for the extra weight loaders and assistance!
We have to especially thank Dr. Trevor Cottrell and Jeffery Schrank. Without their countless hours of work this meet would have not run this smoothly! Stay tuned for additional competition opportunities coming to the Houston community.
