How to Improve Your Vertical Jump

Written by ATH Team | Mar 20, 2018 9:27:00 PM

The vertical jump is a great way to measure vertical power output in an athlete, and is very important for many sports such as basketball, football and soccer. In order to improve vertical jump height we focus on developing the overall strength and power of our athletes as well as jumping mechanics.

The squat is one of many great exercises at improving vertical jump height because the squat teaches us how to properly and safely send force into the ground that will result in a higher vertical jump.  Getting stronger in different squat variations while maintaining good mobility allows us to continue improvement in our athletes throughout their careers.

We use the Keiser AirSquat to measure peak forces and power outputs within our training programs.

At ATH, we can use the Keiser AirSquat to measure peak forces and power outputs within our training programs. This special piece of equipment gives our athletes immediate feedback on every rep that is crucial for steady progress. We track this data so we can see how power output differs at various resistances and how vertical jump height improves with strength throughout our training cycles. Using the Keiser AirSquat allows us to train all of our athletes in a safe, aggressive fashion that promotes positive growth.

Additionally, we utilize a variety of lower body and bi-lateral movements such as back squat, front Squat and hex bar deadlift to develop strength. We also breakdown the jump into different phases to teach appropriate mechanics, in order to jump efficiently and effectively. Other plyometric exercises we coach are box jumps, over head med ball throws, short hurdle hops and over speed jumps to make the stretch shortening cycle more efficient.

At Athlete Training and Health, both Forever Athletes and Amateur Athletes receive similar vertical power work in their daily training.
