Performance Mouth Rinse

With the acceleration of performance products ranging from heart monitors embedded in athletic apparel to BodPod machines we now have available to us performance mouth rinse that studies have shown can be effective.

 
 

“Carbohydrate based mouth rinses have shown benefits most for elite level long distance runners who do not feel the need to consume beverages during their competition,” says Brett Singer, certified sports dietitian/nutritionist for Memorial Hermann Ironman Sports Medicine Institute.

 

“Studies have shown that beverages do not necessarily have to be consumed to be beneficial.  Your body still has a reacting effect to the carbohydrate even though you may not be ingesting the liquid.”

 

The mouth rinse option is most effective during the fatigue stage of competition or even as an early morning alternative for athletes who prefer not to eat prior to training.

 

“Drinking a sports drink late in competition will not have an immediate impact on performance simply because the digestion that has to occur”, says Singer.

 

“This is why a carbohydrate mouth rinse might be a better option.”
